AVR Draft #3 - G/R Beats (again)

Another AVR draft in the books. This was from a few days ago, i just haven't had time to type this up yet. Swamped with work because of Finals, and also prepping for a PTQ and a GP that are both in less than 2 weeks. Here's a picture of the deck cost-sorted and some sideboard options spread underneath.
I felt this was a 3-0 deck, but I went 1-1. Had a quazi-bye round 1 against an inexperienced player, then had a pretty tight match against a solid player who was playing G/B. Ultimately, we both mulliganed to 5 game 3 and it was a pretty anti-climactic finish. This draft was a 9-pod, so not terrible.

The deck:

2 drops
Kruin Striker
2x Nightshade Peddler
Wandering Wolf
Timberland Guide
Falkenrath Exterminator (Is this guy good? I draft him highly, he seems awesome, never actually cast it)

3 drops
Fervent Cathar
Gloomwidow
Hanweir Lancer
Kessig Malcontents
Borderland Ranger
Trusted Forcemage

4 drops
Heirs of Stromkirk
Hound of Griselbrand
Nettle Swine (i love this guy so much)

5 drops
Wildwood Geist (this guys is a lot worse than i initially thought, fine 5 drop tho)

6 drops
Pathbreaker Wurm

Non-Creatures
Pillar of Flame
Guise of Fire
Eaten by Spiders
2xBlessings of Nature

In Pack 1 Pick 1, i took a Blessings of Nature over a Wandering Wolf and later regretted it. After talking with Kenyon (@azcz) he pointed out how few 2 drops this set really has. All my successful green decks so far have been loaded up with two drops, so I had just assumed he was mistaken. In actuality, i had been correctly valuing them higher than my neighbors so just had a higher density of them than averages would indicate. This deck had enough, but Wandering Wolf is such a key part to making the aggro deck thrive. To be fair, pickign the wolf over the miracle may have been just as bad. It turns out I got a Blessings the very next pick, which is why I regretted the choice, i'd much rather have a wolf over a 2nd blessings. But, as we know hindsight something something...

I initially was looking at G/U with a 3rd pick Tandem Lookout, but blue was completely dry after that. It turns out my neighbor on my right got a 1st pick /AND/ 2nd pick Spirit Away. Can't blame him. Must Be Nice Etc. With a 4th pick Pillar of Flame, I was open to moving into Red, but also knew i could potentially splash it as I'm playing Green and will have access to fixing, but after that I moved in to red with a late striker. From there the draft was fairly straight forward. I opened a Malcontents pack 2, which has been pretty awesome for me in the decks where he is good.

I've been playing a lot of green, especially G/R, and there are some cards i misevaluated initially.
Heirs of Stromkirk. I really thought this card was awesome early on, but it just isn't. While there isn't many artifact creatures that can block it, all of the relevant removal deals with it, and its a clunky 4 drop. I'd rather have a nettle swine that holds off an attack when you cast him, and then can attack the next turn. The Heirs suck at blocking, adn while i dont actively want to be blocking with this deck, there is some value in holdign off an attack the turn it comes down. You can say something similar about Gloomwidow, but at least it comes down on 3, and immediately starts attacking for 3, while holding off fliers at a minimum.

Hopefully i'll have good reason to switch to a different archetype soon. I've drafted a pretty decent mono-b deck, adn i keep hoping i'll get a chance to do that again so i can write about it here. Happy drafting!
