AVR Draft #1 G/r Beats

Each set that comes out I try to find a good way to document my draft process. Instead of trying to write up set reviews or primers, I'm going to post my drafts here, with notes about what worked for me and what didn't. Also I'll be asking the readers for any feedback on misevaluations I made.

This isn't my first draft of the format, but the first one I kept record of, so here it is.
I only kept the Maindeck list, but in the future I plan to do my best to document the sideboard also.

No 1 drops.

I went 2-0-1 with this deck, splitting in the finals of the 8-pod. I ended up in green after windmill slamming a P1p1 Wolfir Silverheart and picking up a Blessing of Nature and Trusted Forcemage in my next two picks. The pack I opened also had a Trusted Forcemage, Timberland Guide, Wandering Wolf and Borderland Ranger. I was counting on tabling a solid card, and was planning on the ol' hook-n-cut since the 2 next best cards in this pack were green as well. I did end up tabling the Wandering Wolf (Which I think is better than Timberland Guide which had been taken from the pack) The Wolf has tons of synergy with the rest of greens cards. He loves being pumped and he's very hard to block. In the 2nd pack I opened Revenge of the Hunted, which I hadn't played yet, and was an easy choice over picking up a second Forcemage. I was immediately passed a Soul of the Harvest, and figured my hook-n-cut was successful. It turned out that while the player on my left wasn't green, the next two players over were. In this pack I ended up with two fairly late Lightning Prowess as well as the Lightning Mauler, and a small number of playable green cards like Timberland Guide and a gift Borderland Ranger late. In Pack 3 I first picked a Druid's Familiar followed by two Wandering Wolfs and I was pretty happy with my deck. In building I had considered cutting all the red for green. I did have access to a 2nd Nettle Boar and the Green Spirit that attacks as a 5/5 but blocks as a 3/3. Combining that with marginal cards like Terrifying Presence could have completely removed red from my deck, but i decided the 2nd color wasn't much of a draw back and the cards it brought were simply more powerful than my remaining green options.

In round 1 I played against a Blue/Black grindy deck that didn't really have a chance to start grinding. Game 1 I curved Wandering Wolf->Forcemange->Timberland Guide+Lightning Mauler. And that game ended quickly. Game 2 he nearly stabilized with a pair of the 5/3 vanilla demons but i was able to trade 2/x + ping from Lightning Prowess to finish them off and eventually slammed a Wolfir Silverheart to end the game in one swing (after pairing it with a Lightning Mauler and bashing for 14).

In round 2 I played against a close friend of mine playing Blue/Green. He was two seats to my left, and had complained that green dried up a bit for him. One game he had a chance by using the Into the Void and slowing me down, but Silverheart plus Blessings of Nature combined with a Wandering Wolf were just too much. In game 2 he had some color problems casting his spells and a decently fast start was too punishing to let him dig out.

I split in the 3rd round, and typically I'll play it out anyway just to get another repetition with the deck that performed well, but they were starting another draft so I decided just to jump on to the next. In short, i've really enjoyed green in this format. The creatures up and down the curve are all pretty amazing, and even the Nettle Boar has turned out to be even better than I initially imagined. I was already happy with a bonused Hill Giant, but he's proven to be much more valuable than that, as 4 power is huge in this format, getting through most of blue and white's defensive creatures.

2-0-1
